ALVAR Biography

Alvar was born in the Catalan coastal village of Montgat near Barcelona in 1935. He studied painting at age twelve and at age seventeen was accepted to art school in Barcelona, where one of his paintings was acquired by the Museum of Modern Art. He gave his first solo exhibitions in 1957 and was awarded a scholarship to study in Paris where he remained for ten years. Since a decisive solo exhibition in Paris in 1963, Alvar has exhibited regularly throughout Europe, the United States, Canada and Japan. His lithographs, paintings and sculptures have been presented in major shows all over the world. Many Museums have accepted his work for their permanent collections including…The Georgia Museum of Art in Athens, Georgia, The Kumamoto Museum and The Fukoka Museum, both in Kyushu, Japan. Over the last forty years, Alvar has become a household name through-out the world. His work has enjoyed tremendous success in major exhibitions in most major cities in the Western world as well as parts of the Eastern world. Today he creates oil paintings, lithographs, watercolors and bronze. His work can be found in both private and public collections.

ALVAR Description

Alvar Sunol Munoz-Ramos, commonly known as Alvar, was born in 1935 in Montgat, a Catalan fishing village on the Mediterranean coast near Barcelona.  In the 1960’s he moved to Paris and exhibited with other major Catalan artists including Picasso, Miro, and Dali.  Today, Alvar is recognized on an international platform for his ability to convey the complex nature of human existence and the psychological complexities of art-making and creation.  Alvar’s works can be found in the permanent collection of over fourteen museums worldwide.  Most recently, Alvar was honored with a retrospective at the Cultural Center of Girona, Catalonia, Spain which celebrated fifty years of artistic production by Alvar.  Alvar’s influence and the innovation of his artistic presence in the Catalonian and contemporary context is a major accomplishment.
